How to Check IMEI Status

The IMEI is a phone's unique identity number. Checking it tells you whether the phone is genuine, registered, and safe to buy — and it costs nothing.

Finding the IMEI

Dial *#06# — the fastest way on any phone. You can also find it in Settings > About phone, printed on the SIM tray or back panel of some models, or on the original box. On a dual-SIM phone, check both IMEI numbers, one per SIM slot.

Checking it on DIRBS

SMS the IMEI to 8484 or enter it at dirbs.pta.gov.pk. The reply tells you whether the device is compliant (registered), non-compliant (duty unpaid), or blocked. Only DIRBS can give an official answer — third-party “IMEI check” websites are not authoritative.

Protecting your IMEI

Treat the IMEI like a serial number: do not post it in screenshots, sale listings, or social media, and do not send it to anyone who does not need it. MobileZone's own PTA Tax Calculator validates an IMEI only inside your browser — it is never sent or stored anywhere.

IMEI problems to walk away from

A phone whose IMEI does not show on *#06#, whose box IMEI differs from the phone's IMEI, or whose DIRBS result is “blocked” should not be bought at any price. A mismatched or missing IMEI is a strong sign of a tampered, stolen, or cloned device.

What is an IMEI?
A unique 15-digit number that identifies a single phone. Networks use it to recognise and, if needed, block a device.
Is the 8484 SMS check free?
DIRBS replies to the 8484 SMS check; your network's standard SMS charges may apply. The web check at dirbs.pta.gov.pk is free.
Should I share my IMEI with a buyer?
Only when you are actually selling the phone, and only with the genuine buyer — never in a public listing.
