PTA Approved vs Non-PTA Phones: The Full Difference
In Pakistan, a phone is either registered with the PTA (approved) or it is not. That one fact decides whether it keeps working on local networks — and how much extra you may owe.
What PTA approved means
A PTA-approved phone is registered in DIRBS (the PTA's device system) and works on all local networks without further duty. A non-PTA phone is unregistered: it may work briefly on a network and then be blocked until duty is paid and it is registered.
The real cost of a non-PTA phone
A non-PTA phone is not “cheaper” — its true price is the shop price plus the duty. Estimate that duty first with the PTA Tax Calculator: the total depends on value band, route (passport or CNIC) and filer status. A phone that looks like a bargain can cost more than an approved one once duty is added.
How to buy safely
Prefer PTA-approved phones. If you consider a non-PTA phone, check its IMEI on DIRBS before paying (see the approval guide), subtract the duty from your budget, and get the seller's commitment in writing about who pays if registration fails. Never buy a phone whose DIRBS result is “blocked”.
Passport-route phones
Phones brought in by travellers may be registered on the passport route, where income tax is exempt and one eligible device per year may be tax-free if DIRBS confirms eligibility. Eligibility is never automatic — confirm it on DIRBS before assuming it.
